So last night I had a date at The Black Sheep in Carver. I have eaten there many times before, but have not been back in a while, since my girl Tesni started working there. I was broke as hell but decided to say F*ck it, and indulge in the amazing menu. I went out on a limb and ordered the fish tacos. If you have ever eaten at the Black Sheep, you will know that it’s not the first place you think of when you think seafood. So I started with a salad called the “Nuts & Berries” which was a perfect salad composed of fresh local organic spinach and mixed greens, roasted acorn squash, roasted pecans, cranberries, with a cranberry vinaigrette. It was absolutely insane. So much flavor, and the squash tasted almost sweet. It was like eating a pie.
Tesni also poured me a glass of original NEHI Grape Soda. For those of you not familiar with NEHI, its basically the cream of the crop. It is by far the best grape soda I have ever had. I could have drank it all night. Then I got my fish tacos and was blown away:
What you see above you is a Make-Your-Own taco set up. Two steamy hot grilled fish steaks with black beans, rice, mango salsa, fresh guacamole, green leave lettuce and sour cream. Inane. I made three huge-ass tacos and layered them exactly how I liked it. A little bit of guacamole first, then some beans and rice, then a layer of fish, then more guac, more beans, then the mango salsa. After filling up all three taco shells, I still have a full plate of food left to finish with plenty of fish and all the toppings. I killed the best deviled eggs that I have EVER had, and then boxed up the rest of the food for lunch. Rachel and I then topped that meal off with a piece of peanut butter pie. Holy Shit.
I could go on an on about this place. The subs there are called battleships and are literally like 16 inches long. And their salads are constantly amazing.
So it’s a touch choice, but even though The Black Sheep is not a designated vegetarian restaurant, it might be my favorite place to eat in Richmond. I think my order might go something like this:
1. The Black Sheep (winning over Ipanema only because it’s smoke free)
2. Ipanema Cafe
3. 821 Cafe
4. Edo’s Squid / Mamma Zu’s
5. Kuba Kuba
6. Cafe Ole
7. Lift Coffee (because their paninis are insane)
