12/18/2009 - BEAST : Fabio Vialle

It’s not often that I’m completely blown by an artist, but Favio Viale has done it. Straight up dropped my jaw like a bag a bricks. A lot of art is usually very conceptually driven, but Fabios work is both conceptual, AND he shows off a tremendeous amount of control and talent for the medium he works with . Marble. First off, this dude made a boat out of marble that actually was bouyant and functional. Beast! I don’t know if you’ve ever picked up a slab of marble before, but its NOT light. At all. Like no.  It makes me love the way this guy thinks. Its almost completely pointless, but makes so much sense at the same time. From there he also renders a variety of textures and materials all out of marble, all with a level precision and replication that one’s eye is completely fooled until you touch the piece. From styrofoam, to tissue, to tires. The dude kills. A beautiful mix of traditional craftsmanship and conceptual exploration. See more of this beasts work at his website.
